Bend Sinister Visits The GOAT

In just about a hour you can check out Bend Sinister performing at the Flying Steamshovel in Rossland. Performing does not feel right in this context; I think the better fit here is rocking out. Earlier today Bend Sinister joined me at The GOAT for a chat about the show tonight. Last night they were in Nelson and had a stellar time, tonight they are returning to the Flying Steamshovel in Rossland for an 8pm show. Advance tickets (you may have missed the boat on this) are $10 and admission at the door is $15. Grab your buddies and head there now for a burger (and maybe some curry), a beer and a fantastic show. Don't forget to wear your dancing shoes!

The very generous lads in Bend Sinister hooked me up with a copy of their latest album "Animals" and I will be honest with you I jammed to it the entire way home tonight.

If you can't catch them tonight there are many more chances for you to see them if you are in Western Canada. They will be visiting Kamloops, Calgary and many other places on their tour this summer. Seriously Calgary friends, you need to see these Vancouver rockers when they take the stage at Ship & Anchor's big celebration on July 24th. For the full look at their tour click here.

I wish we could have recorded our chat before the interview; there were so many interesting topics we touched on before the mics turned on.

Castlegar Sunfest 2014

I am pretty pumped about Sunfest this year, why? Well because it is my first Sunfest! I have officially been living in the Kootenays for 11 months + 1 week (I am just twenty-one days away from a full year)! This is one of the last events that I can say that I have not been part of. 

One really cool part of Sunfest was the Craig Mortiz show last night at Kinsman Park. He took Mountain FM by storm yesterday when he came in. The lovely Jenny Fines interviewed him because I was on my lunch break at the gym. Apparently Craig is not on Kootenay time! Between the country boy and country fan-girl giggles they had a great chat about his upcoming album and his last appearance here in the Kootenays years ago for Trail Silver City Days. I do not normally post other peoples interviews, but Craig Mortiz is the exception to the rule.

His show was awesome! Lots of dancing from my partners in crime, couples and of course the kids! Enormous productions provided the awesome light show and killer sound that had everyone on their feet. Craig Mortiz and his band were the stars of the show though; I would have to say the highlight moment for me was when they covered John Micheal Montgomery's "Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)" one of my all-time favourite country songs. I'm not a dancer, but I let a small child lead me around the grass dance floor for that one! 

Castlegar's own Lisa Nicole was even there jamming to Craig's tunes!

Here the song we featured on Mountain FM from Craig Mortiz, played for the first time on rock radio it is called "Ready to Roll".

This one really stuck out to me during the show... it is the "booty call song" (formally known as "Only When Your Lonely").

Craig Mortiz was the highlight of Sunfest Friday for sure!

I am really excited to go check in on our Mountain FM "Kiss My Glass" contest that is running as I type this blog up over at the park. The last person with their lips to the glass will win $600 cash from Adam's Windows and Doors! 

Sunfest continues tonight and tomorrow at Kinsman Park in Castlegar! I'll update with the results of "Kiss My Glass" a little later today :)

I treated the Street Team to deep-fried oreos and we enjoyed a TON of amazing food vendors. Kootenay Kettle Corn and Filipino food were my guilty pleasures today; along with handfuls of salt water taffy. It is a good thing Sunfest weekend is not every weekend that is for sure! 

Lisa Nicole on Mountain FM’s Morning Rocks

Today I ended my two-day stint co-hosting Morning Rocks on Mountain FM with John Helm; the lovely Jenny Fines was away celebrating her birthday.

Lisa Nicole joined us on the morning show in anticipation of her big show on Saturday night at the Old Theatre in Castlegar. Fresh off winning two Kootenay Music Awards a couple of weeks ago at the 3^rd annual ceremony, Lisa Nicole will be putting on quite the show with opening act Jason Thomas Saturday, May 24^th. FYI Lisa Nicole took home two Kootenay Music Awards on Friday May 9^, 2014 at the Spiritbar in Nelson. She was voted to have the “Album of the Year” for It Got Ugly and was voted “Best Roots, Country” or Folk Artist as well.

Freda Kelly on Mountain FM

Looks like I forgot to post this back in December!

After the release of her new documentary 'Good Ol Freda', Freda Kelly joined us on Mountain FM to talk about her life working as the Beatles' secretary and head of their fan club. Freda lives a normal life as a legal secretary now but was part of Beatlemania and has even been given the title of “sister of the Beatles". After seeing them perform before their broke in the Cavern to rumours of romances with member of the Fab Four, Freda experienced it all and details her life in the new documentary available here.

George Longden on the 32nd Annual Community Christmas Dinner

If you are like me and have no where to be Christmas Day for Dinner you should head to the 32nd
Annual Community Christmas Dinner. It sounds like a great event and a huge tradition for the Grand Forks community, this year Greenwood reisdents are welcome (as your community dinner is not happening this year). This is a massive accomplishment for the community of Grand Forks, it is put on completely by volunteers. Oh... and I almost forgot to mention Santa will be there for the kids!

Rossland Mountain Film Festival's Roxy Piette On Morning Rocks!

This morning on Morning Rocks Roxy Piette joined us from the Rossland Mountain Film Festival. Roxy is
the chair of the Rossland Mountain Film Festival that is going into its fourteenth year in 2013. The festival kicked off last night in Rossland and will be underway all weekend.

Matt Mays on Mountain FM

Matt Mays will be playing the Spirit Bar in Nelson tonight. I am really excited for the show, doors are at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. Adam Baldwin will open this acoustic set that will similar to an East Coast Kitchen Party. Tickets are just $20 and you can get yours at www.mattmays.com. 

I am really looking forward to Matt Mays tonight; he puts on a killer show. I have seen him a few times back home in Nova Scotia and he nails it every time. 

Marc Vedo on Morning Rocks

We had a great talk with Marc Vedo about his show here in the Kootenays. He visited the Castlegar Friday night and put on an amazing show with Boy George. We talk small towns, hockey and his love of Canadian steak in this chat from across the pond.
