Introducing The GOAT to the Kootenays!

Well it has been a crazy weekend that is for sure! Friday we broke new ground for Vista Radio

Kootenays by flipping our second station in two weeks.

Our sister station 1035 the Bridge flipped a two weeks ago to 1035 Juice FM – Nelson’s Biggest Variety and now what used to be Mountain FM is now The GOAT. I totally get the questions and the laughs over the name change, but once you get that GOAT is an acronym for “Greatest Of All Time” it is easy to get behind. I hope you have been listening and like what you hear. If you missed the big launch you can here the moment we flipped from Mountain to the GOAT right here:

Unlike Nelson and Juice FM the GOAT still sounds the same. I have heard so many great comments and people were so excited to get new GOAT swag at my remote broadcast yesterday. I was on location for the afternoon yesterday at Andre’s in Uptown Centre and lots of people stopped in to pick up water bottles, frisbees and pens! 

Don't worry, John and Jenny are still waking up with you on the Morning Herd and I am currently on-air from 10am until 6pm weekdays. We still have all the local content you loved before but now we have a fresh new polished sound!

I am pretty pumped about Sunfest this year, why? Well because it is my first Sunfest! I have officially been living in the Kootenays for 11 months + 1 week (I am just twenty-one days away from a full year)! This is one of the last events that I can say that I have not been part of. 

One really cool part of Sunfest was the Craig Mortiz show last night at Kinsman Park. He took Mountain FM by storm yesterday when he came in. The lovely Jenny Fines interviewed him because I was on my lunch break at the gym. Apparently Craig is not on Kootenay time! Between the country boy and country fan-girl giggles they had a great chat about his upcoming album and his last appearance here in the Kootenays years ago for Trail Silver City Days. I do not normally post other peoples interviews, but Craig Mortiz is the exception to the rule.

His show was awesome! Lots of dancing from my partners in crime, couples and of course the kids! Enormous productions provided the awesome light show and killer sound that had everyone on their feet. Craig Mortiz and his band were the stars of the show though; I would have to say the highlight moment for me was when they covered John Micheal Montgomery's "Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)" one of my all-time favourite country songs. I'm not a dancer, but I let a small child lead me around the grass dance floor for that one! 

Castlegar's own Lisa Nicole was even there jamming to Craig's tunes!

Here the song we featured on Mountain FM from Craig Mortiz, played for the first time on rock radio it is called "Ready to Roll".

This one really stuck out to me during the show... it is the "booty call song" (formally known as "Only When Your Lonely").

Craig Mortiz was the highlight of Sunfest Friday for sure!

I am really excited to go check in on our Mountain FM "Kiss My Glass" contest that is running as I type this blog up over at the park. The last person with their lips to the glass will win $600 cash from Adam's Windows and Doors! 

Sunfest continues tonight and tomorrow at Kinsman Park in Castlegar! I'll update with the results of "Kiss My Glass" a little later today :) 

Update: Our four finalists split the "Kiss My Glass" $600 prize after keeping their lips locked on the glass from 9am until 6:50pm! Big thanks to Adam's Windows and Doors!

I treated the Street Team to deep-fried oreos and we enjoyed a TON of amazing food vendors. Kootenay Kettle Corn and Filipino food were my guilty pleasures today; along with handfuls of salt water taffy. It is a good thing Sunfest weekend is not every weekend that is for sure! 

Mountain FM and AM Ford Ride the Heart & Stroke Big Bike!

On Tuesday Jenny Fines and I experienced our first Big Bike ride together as Team Mountain FM, a division

of Team AM Ford. It was so nice of everyone at AM Ford to invite us to take part in this massive fundraiser for the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada. We were a little intimidated by the huge 29 seat bike, but the hardest part was getting on. 

We really did have so much fun ripping around downtown Trail with our friends from AM Ford. We made a lot of noise as we passed through the streets and people inside businesses came out to cheer us on. We may have run a few red lights, but that is not why cars honked and people waved at us--- everyone we passed in Trail was super supportive. 

I still can't believe we were invited to take part in this incredible event! 

Not that it is a competition (but it kind of is) but when we sat our butts on the bike we (Team AM Ford) were tied, neck and neck with Teck's fundraising efforts!

Mountain Middays - Daily Dose of Weird May 12, 2014- The Cat Came Back... 3 Years Later

Today’s Daily Dose of Weird was a happy one. Unfortunately the tsunami that happened in March 2011 in Japan does not have any redeeming factors, but this is a small wonder in the midst of so much tragedy.

After three years Suika that cat has found his way home after surviving the tsunami. Over the weekend Sukia was returned to its owners after being found in a forest in Rikuzentakata. The strangest thing about the story of missing Suika is that he was home alone when the tsunami struck and the house survived the disaster.

The cat did come back… this time 3 years later.

Castlegar Sculpture Walk Kick-Off 2014

Another sure sign that we are in the last weeks of spring and that Summer 2014 is rapidly approaching

is that Castlegar Sculpture Walk is once again beautifying Downtown Castlegar.

Saturday night it was my pleasure to represent Mountain FM at the Sculpture Walk Opening Gala. Many of the artists were on-hand to meet-and-greet sponsors, volunteers and fans of Sculpture Walk.

The event was held (fittingly) at Kootenay Gallery and catered by the Element Club Bar and Grill.

To be honest with you, I had visited The Element earlier in the day for lunch. If you read this blog you know that I am a BIG fan of the team at the Element and I visit at least once a month to check out the monthly special. This month is Mexican Fiesta and features authentic tastes of Mexico. I'll have a blog with all the mouth-watering details on the amazing new additions to the menu tomorrow.

Now, back to Sculpture Walk talk.

Castlegar can now say that it is “The Sculpture Capital of Canada”, the phrase has been trademarked --- just one of the many happy announcements from last night’s gala.

I have never seen anything quite like Sculpture Walk. I think it is absolutely fabulous. For those who are not familiar with Sculpture Walk it is an impressive mixture of sculptures from local, Canadian and international artists spread throughout town. Sculptures are sponsored by businesses and compete for thousands of dollars in prize money throughout the summer. You can vote on your favourite for the annual People’s Choice Award.

Mountain FM is on the Sculpture Walk route and the work we sponsored last year (“The Green Man” by Daniel Kloc) was constantly being viewed by passers-by and people doing the sculpture walk until it was removed to prepare for this years showcase.

Mountain Middays - Daily Dose of Weird April 24, 2014 - The Great Axe Indy Thief of 2014

Sorry about the delay and the little break. I did not like Wednesday’s Weird News item, “Palcohol” so I took the day off from posting.

After a busy weekend I am back to writing and getting ready for a half-week at work. So the first of my two posts today is about “The Great Axe Indy Thief of 2014”.  If you are visiting Indiana and see a crap load of cheap (well cheaper) Axe body wash be wary... I can’t imagine that anyone would ever keep this much Axe; it is beyond a lifetime supply.

Mountain Middays - Daily Dose of Weird April 15, 2014 - Vancouver's First Strip Spelling Bee

I kind of went off the rails yesterday with the prom blog. So today will be short and sweet. Vancouver’s first Strip Spelling Bee is being held as I type this blog. It was the subject of today’s weird news. This is a “body positive” event…  good thing! My Canadian wintered body would need to be layered in a snowsuit to be taking part in this event. Why? I am admittedly not the strongest speller. Also, I have the attention span of a cricket so shirts would have to come off every minute to keep my attention. I’m not great with losing either…

Anyways, here you have it. Vancouver’s first Strip Spelling Bee is April 15, 2014’s Daily Dose of Weird.

Daily Dose of Weird - April 11, 2014 - Man Who Sues His Mother's Nursing Home Over Strippers

I have never seen a strip show. I think I will leave it on the bucket list so that it can anger my future children because I will be spending my old-age money by putting loonies in a pair of SAXX 37.0. Good thing I don't plan on having children, everybody wins! Well, it is mainly just the Strippers and I winning but two out of three isn't bad right?

If I do ever have children I hope they aren't little jerks like this guy. Seriously, when I am 85 let me do what I want. Unless there are serious crimes going on in the photos found showing the elderly lady and the strippers than let it be and just be happy to have a mum!

Daily Dose of Weird - April 08, 2014 - Crazy Lady Helps Herself At McDonald's

I love weird news. So now I am going to bring you your daily dose of crazy and weird on Mountain Middays.

Today’s story was an easy one. Crazy and fast-food combined into one incredibly weird package.

As a person who has worked in the quick food service industry a lot, I can totally picture how this happened. I can envision it in my head as clear as day. Why? Well I have dealt with a lot of crazy moments behind the counter. It is kind of like a team building exercise sometimes to deal with out of the ordinary situations like this one where a topless woman found herself behind the counter of a Florida McDonald’s and self-served herself some soft-serve (among other things). All while being captured on security cameras.

Now this out-crazies anything I have ever dealt with by a mile… at least. But, just think of the staff of teenagers who will remember this for the rest of their lives. Every time they see each other they will be like, “Remember that Monday night a lady in a thong decided to take over and trash McDonalds? I was there!”

Yes, this lady did a number on the McDonald’s trashing camp as she helped herself to ice cream and fries. 

Who hasn't wanted to go behind the counter and fill their own order out of frustration, this lady was just taking it to the next level. Reminding me of one of my all-time favorite characters and this great moment…

Rotary Club of Castlegar Sunrise 2000's 15th Annual Wine Festival

One of the most amazing things about living in British Columbia is the incredible selection of local wines that are available here.

Every year Mountain FM takes part in the Castlegar Sunrise 2000 Rotary Club’s Wine Festival and 2014 was no exception. This year was the 15^th Annual event and brought in wines from across B.C. for tasting.

I am so impressed at the turnout for this event! The entire room was buzzing and PACKED with some of the best wines in B.C. and their biggest fans. The booths were engaged with patrons the entire night. The Castlegar Rec. Centre was definitely the place to be last night!

With over thirty wineries onsite everyone was celebrating the diverse selection of wines produced right here in B.C. In passing I heard multiple people talking about their drives in from Spokane and other areas outside of town to come to the Wine Festival.

I am not the most knowledgeable person on the subject of wines. I prefer rose and reds to whites and choose sparking over still. With that being said I found quite a few new favorites I can’t wait to try again.

My overall favorite from the entire night was Heron Ridge Estates’ sparkling blueberry wine. Monster Vineyards’ riesling, Dirty Laundry Vineyards’ Hush and Quinta Ferreira Estate Winery’s unoaked chardonnay were among my other new favorites from the festival.

On top of all of the incredible wines to be tasted Bon Appetito Catering provided food that stopped all of the wine from going to our heads. The catering was tasty and the service was incredible. Shrimp, chicken skewers, artichoke dip baguettes and chocolate (milk and white) dipped strawberries were just some of the treats available. The big food winners were definitely the chocolate dipped strawberries; oh my damn they were good!

On top of treats for your taste buds there were also tons of chances to win. There were huge door prizes and a silent auction to check out as well.

One amazing thing about small towns is how everyone comes together to support events like the Wine Festival. Working in events and promotions I know how hard it can be to get people out to events (there are way too many good TV shows on these days)! It is so encouraging seeing young and old come out to events like this. Also the support from the Rotoract and the Interact Clubs was very impressive as well.

Kevin decided that he would be our designated driver so I tried to keep the night interesting for both of us by initiating a little game. Kevin is much more knowledgeable about wines than I am. His parent’s house has an incredible wine cellar and he grew up drinking wine; unlike me. The game was that he would find a wine without me looking and I would have to guess what vineyard and wine he had gotten me. This worked very well because he made me try things that I definitely would not have picked out for myself.

The Sunrise 2000 Rotary Club’s 15^th Annual Wine Festival was a great time! I can’t wait until the 16^th Annual event!

March 21, 2014 New Music: “Heaven Knows” and “Fair is Fair”

We have some new tunes on Mountain FM just for you. Two new songs this week and they are goodies. The first we will talk about is from The Pretty Reckless and it is called “Heaven Knows”. This video is NSFW!

Sexy, dark and goth you will find yourself singing this one later in the day. This is the first The Pretty Reckless track that we have added here on Mountain, what do you think?

The Pretty Reckless is an American band from New York City, fronted by television star Taylor Momsen. Momsen played Jenny Humphrey on Gossip Girl, you may also remember her as Cindy Lou who in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. 

“Heaven Knows” is the second single from The Pretty Reckless’ sophomore album Going to Hell. At first I questioned it, but now I really like “Heaven Knows”. It is catchy and sassy. Two of my favourite things…

Viewer discretion is advised for this music video, it maybe a little too sassy. Way too sassy for work, which is where most of the staff at Mountain FM viewed it. Awkward.

Second, representing my home province it is “What’s Fair is Fair” from The Trews. This is the lyric video for their latest track, “What’s Fair is Fair”. Their website says they are working on a performance video for “What’s Fair is Fair”.

The Trew’s actually are from my home province, Nova Scotia. I went to university in the town they are from, Antigonish.  They formed in high school and are legends around the Nish! I am sure you have heard us play them on Mountain before; we love The Trews! I get really excited whenever I see a Trews song come up in my show logs.

The Trews latest single “What’s Fair is Fair” is no exception. Every Trews song is relatable and genuine. I am so excited for new Trews new album coming out this year!

Shake the Tree: Finale on Morning Rocks

Michele from Rara Avis Dancers on the 10th Annual Dance Extravaganza

The Rara Avis Dancers are getting ready to present the 10^th Annual Dance Extravaganza (and Yuletide Market) on December 5^th. I spoke with Michele from the Rara Avis dance troupe about the events history and what people can expect this year. On top of the show there is also a Yuletide Market, you can drop by the Grand Forks Secondary School at 5:30pm to check out the market and doors for the show are at 6:30pm. Matt Mays on Mountain FM

Matt Mays will be playing the Spirit Bar in Nelson tonight. I am really excited for the show, doors are at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. Adam Baldwin will open this acoustic set that will similar to an East Coast Kitchen Party. Tickets are just $20 and you can get yours at www.mattmays.com. 

I am really looking forward to Matt Mays tonight; he puts on a killer show. I have seen him a few times back home in Nova Scotia and he nails it every time.
