Netflix Classic: World's Greatest Dad

Have you ever watched a movie so bad you wondered what were those people thinking? I do this all the time. In fact you can read my previous blog about ‘Sharknado’ it was the worst movie I have ever seen. Which has inspired me to start a log of all the movies I watch that are just down-right horrible, most of them are F-list horror movies with cooky titles found on Netflix, hence the label “Neflix Classics”.  Every Saturday you can find my latest “Netflix Classic” review right here on my Mountain FM Blog.

World's Greatest Dad (2009)

In one word this movie is dysfunctional. 

To give this movie credit it is bold. I never imagined the dark places this movie goes. Honestly, I picked it for this week’s Netflix Classic because I had a jones-ing for a Robin Williams family movie; World’s Greatest Dad was definitely not what I had in mind. Seriously, don't watch this movie based on it’s poster!

I found this movie really hard to watch. The topics were uncomfortable and the characters were all very hard to like. It is a twisted movie, even though I like raunchy comedy parts in this movie are too much.

The movie drags along too, character development happens quickly in the beginning and then you are waiting for the movies climax. World’s Greatest Dad then plateaus on the action for a while and eventually wraps up quickly.

I won’t be watching this one again. I’m not sure who I would recommend this movie to  I have a feeling it would make pretty much anyone feel uncomfortable and confused. Even for some dark comedy I don’t think this movie is funny enough to balance its grimness.

Social Media Frustrations

I put a lot of time and effort into honing my social media skills.

Seriously, I have read ‘Social Media Marketing for Dummies’.

I have taken LYNDA.com’s Social Media courses and spent a lot of time learning about how to craft perfect social media campaigns and posts, so nothing is more frustrating to me than a post like this going viral. Yes, I spent time searching for the perfect rainy day photo to start my show but it was nothing compared to the time I spend writing our stations mandatory blogs.

Yes, rubber boot dogs are adorable. I love that my post went Kootenay viral this morning. But nothing is more frustrating than the love a simple weather related post can get in comparison with things like our station blogs.

To add to the frustration, my blog post showing what I would potentially look like on meth is my most viral blog post. I am pretty happy my second most popular blog post is my ‘In Defense of Nickleback’, which took a long time to write (so I am happy about it).

Here is my face on meth:

Social media, you are madness. No matter what anyone says there is very little science and method to it all. So post rubber boot dogs, hopefully your business sells rubber boots. 

Adorable New Born Puppy and Cheetah Cub Companions

 A story from the Dallas Zoo has gone viral this afternoon. The Zoo plans to raise two new-born cheetah cubs with a Labrador retriever puppy to try to hinder aggression and act as a calming influence on the cubs as they grow into adulthood.

The cheetah cubs and the black Labrador retriever puppy are eight-weeks-old, making this the most adorable story to hit the news in a long time. The Lab puppy is names Amani and the cheetah cubs are named Winspear and Kamau.

I think this will work, when I visited the San Diego Zoo in March I saw a really cool exhibit about animals living together that you would not think could be companions. Bakka, a South African male cheetah and Miley, a female husky mix are animal companions raised together in harmony. They were so cute together, lounging around their pen and talking walks through the park together. Even licking each other clean!

Some people are questioning these tactics for raising the cheetah cubs, but I think under the guidance of experienced Zoologists at the Dallas Zoo this may just end up being just as adorable as it sounds.

Animals that grow up together (with an animal of a different species) don’t seem to have the same aggression patterns. I have seen weird pairings of cats and dogs besties on my farm growing up. I can’t wait to see a video of Winspear and Kamau wrestling with Amani in a few weeks, they are pretty cute new-borns but I think will be adorable in a couple weeks!

#GETINMYBelly: McDonald's Is Launching Mighty Wings

McDonald’s (American McDonalds) will be releasing a new menu item in four days. If you are going to the States pick me up at least a dozen of McDonald’s new chicken wings. I am pretty excited about this, my first marketing/promotions job was at McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada and my first real-world growing up job was at Greenwood McDonald’s (in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley) back when I was 16.

I never thought I would be one of those kids hauling-butt working for the man, I fully intended on living summers of privilege relaxing by the pool driving my friends around, working casually at my parent’s businesses. That was the plan until I smashed up my moms mini-van learning to park (I’m not the world’s best driver by the way). I was forced to spend my entire summer leading into Grade 12 working at our local McDonald’s, please note I am from a very small town so working at McDonald’s still meant a 30 minute drive each way to work.

Anyways, this has resulted in a lifelong fascination and fierce loyalty to McDonald’s. My boyfriend’s parents make fun of me because whenever we travel I have to test the waters at the local McDonald’s on our vacation. By test the waters I totally mean eat a bunch of greasy food and call my former bosses and tell them about the wonderful things America has that we will someday inherit.

Some of these things are:

-20 chicken nuggets for $5 (more than enough to share as a snack, perfect if you are dining late at night and need something to tide you over until a fancy-smancy supper)

-Chicken McBites (we had these bad boys in Canada for a short time, America had them much longer than we did and they even had spicy McBites)

-Frozen Lemonades (need I say more?)

-Coke FreeStyle Drink Machines (These guys are truly magical, hundreds of soft-drinks at your finger tips. I’m not even sure some of these pop flavours exist in the real world. My entire trip to New York was spent marveling and talking about how fascinating these next-generation machines are, I think I spent more time looking at the Coke FreeStyle fountain pop dispenser than any exhibit at the Museum of Natural History).

And now chicken wings will be added to America’s favourite menu, I am thrilled. I think that is one area McDonald’s is lacking, an appetizer menu. Sides are super trendy these days, developing options was one thing McDonald’s excelled at during the advent of the fast-food side-salad. With other fast-food restaurants taking the lead on this I think we will have to wait and see McDonald’s come up with a true game changer because they are innovators in the field and offering up the same sweet potato fries every other chain has would be kind of boring (I would totally still be ordering them, they are delicious).

Chicken wings will do for now, with the release of these new menu options I may just have to take a trip south of the boarder a little sooner than originally planned. McDonald’s Chicken Wings will hit stores next week on September 9^th.

Mc#MightyWings, they are going to be epic. 

Which Way Does Kate Swing? The Sound of Winning with Kate Bruce

This is the first real winner I have had on my Midday Show on Mountain FM. Usually I only get to give things away when I am on other people’s shows, but today I got to give away two 9-hole passes to Castlegar Golf Club & RV Park. Sharon called in and won her first radio contest ever by correctly guessing which way I swing.

It almost does not even matter which way I swing, I am that bad at golf. I have had one lesson from my boyfriend’s father and I am pretty sure I embarrassed him at the club he used to be the President of in Calgary. Taking Summer 2013 off to move was a horrible idea, I really need to spring for some lessons now that I am living the perfect part of the country for golf.

Xbox One Release Info

Coming up on November 22, 2013 Microsoft will celebrate the 8th birthday of the Xbox 360 with the release of the next generation of gaming console, the Xbox One.

Christmas 2008 I was gifted a very nice Xbox 360 from my loving parents. They had finally been worn down by familial fighting over how much time my sister and I could spend playing Rockband on my brother’s Xbox 360. Clearly, he had other games he wanted to be playing. Virtual zombies gotsa get killed and newbes can’t pwn themselves.

In all seriousness, my Xbox 360 was one of my key possessions in university. From hosting Rockband parties in my dorm room to movie nights with the girls... I passed my Xbox down to my younger cousins this spring because I really didn't think I needed to bring it on my move to Calgary (and on to the Kootenays) considering my boyfriend also has one.

On that note, Xbox was a great tool while we were doing the whole long-distance relationship thing in College. He could kick my butt at NHL and I could destroy him at Madden, without having to worry about distance.

One thing I absolutely love (and am not embarrassed about in the slightest) is the Xbox Kinect Disneyland Adventures game. I am obsessed with Disneyland and every time we boot the game up it is like a trip back to one of my favorite places on Earth. Seriously, I know a lot of people rip on the game but I absolutely love it, it is foolish and fun for the whole family!

I am super excited for the latest release, the Xbox One. I will be investing in one for our home for sure! November 22nd the Xbox One will be available in the following countries: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, the U.S., and New Zealand. Releases in other countries will take place in 2014. The console with one controller, updated Kinect hardware,

I won’t be waiting in line to get my Xbox One on release day, but I will be asking for one for Christmas. Many retailers that have been selling pre-orders for the Xbox One have already run out, so get your pre-order in while you still can!

My First Visit to Confusion Taco Food Truck

Have you been to Confusion Taco yet?

Stop reading and track that food truck down right now if your answer is anything less than, “not this week”.

Serious taco game rides around in that truck everyday. I FINALLY got to lunch at Confusion Taco during the food trucks visit to Castlegar this Tuesday.

Boy was I impressed; friendly staff, an impressive collection of hot sauces and amazing food at a great price. It was the perfect treat and it makes me want to skip packing Tuesday lunches all the time.

I always ask for a recommendation on my first trip to a new spot, I asked them to give me their best; the fan favorite and they presented me with the Baja Fish. I LOVE a good fish taco and this taco was better than some of the fish tacos I have had in SoCal. Seriously, you won't believe these bad boys are served out of the back of a truck. My big thing is that a taco has to be moist with salsa and sauces and not messy. Not a drip from this taco and it was still full of amazing flavor from the cilantro slaw, salsa and avocado mayo. And the tempura pacific cod was perfectly cooked, crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. I would never have picked a fish taco for myself (I usually stick with beef and chicken outside of California), but I am sure happy they picked it for me!

Next time I am going to have a heavy dose of Confusion, I think I will skip breakfast and wait till lunch for the Sloppy Jalope. And, maybe even a Great Canadian Taquito for a 3 o’clock wall snack. Here is a look at the menu (right).

'Get Connected' with Selkirk College, Kate Goes Back to School!

Today I went back to school… again.

Up until a couple of months ago I was a professional student (June 2013 to be exact). I spent 19 years in school systems in one way or another. I spent six years in post secondary school, four years at University (StFX) and two years in Radio and Television School (NSCC). I was SUPER excited to be over that and working this year, but surprise (seriously, I was shocked) Friday afternoon I was informed I would be heading back to school on Tuesday with all the students at Selkirk College’s Castlegar Campus.

I left home with this classic Adam Sandler bit from Billy Madison (one of my favourites) in my head. Yes, I am the kid who sang this every first day of school growing up because my aunt let me watch it when I was way too young to understand 90% of the movie (she got in a lot of trouble with my very overprotective father for watching it with me). I have had it stuck in my head ALL DAY, so hopefully now you feel my pain.

I was not social when I started university, honestly this social butterfly did not come out of her cocoon until she turned 19 (I still struggle with it sometimes and revert to hermit mode whenever possible). My roommate and I survived Frosh Week by putting an ‘A’ (for athlete) on our door and hiding inside.

We were those kids, the two girls who no one knew. It was so nice to see Selkirk College combating the first-day nervousness today with a great day for their students full of activities, food, entertainment and more food. Seriously, I think I would have come out of my dorm room for the burgers Selkirk College was dishing out today, they had bacon for them… who does that? Answer: only people who really care about you and improving the state of a burger; that is amazing in my books.

Welcome to the neighborhood all you new Selkirk College students. I don’t have much time on you here in the Kootenays (if you are not from the Kootenays) or in BC in General (I’ve only been in British Columbia since July) but I am extending my hand to help you get used to this place we now call home. Seriously, lets be friends.
